Serving our community comes naturally to Jeff Barker

Jeff Barker was born and raised in Oregon and he’s spent his life in public service.

Jeff enlisted in the Marines when he was 18 and served his country in the US and overseas, including time in Japan, Korea, and the Philippines.

After the Marines, Jeff returned to Oregon where he received his Bachelors Degree from Portland State University. It was during his college years that Jeff decided to focus his future on public service.

That’s why Jeff decided to go into law enforcement after college, working with the Oregon State Police and Portland Police Bureau for a total of thirty-one years. During his time as a police officer, Jeff worked as a patrolman, was active in community policing, and investigated violent crimes as a detective.

These experiences inform Jeff’s many votes to strengthen criminal penalties, improve crime treatment and prevention, and protect local families.

Eventually, Jeff decided that the Legislature needed a new, local voice to fight for our priorities. He was first elected to the Legislature in 2002 and has been our State Representative ever since, where he’s earned a reputation as a leading voice on public safety issues, a passionate defender of public education, and a strong defender of women’s health programs.

Jeff Barker and his wife Vicki have been married for 45 years and they’ve lived in Aloha since 1978 — it’s where they raised their two daughters. One of Jeff’s daughters is a Deputy District Attorney in Portland, and the other is a journeyman electrician.

When he’s not working at the Legislature, Jeff enjoys spending time with his grandson, fishing, hunting, and playing golf.
